For my table top games I like to try and set the scene for that little bit of extra immersion. A battlefield story needs to have something worth fighting over and allows the players to have that sense of purpose and desperation for their forces. One way for me to do this was by creating interesting objective markers.
The idea to have coloured bases is to enable the objectives to still stand out on the battlefield so that players can identify them easily. This prevents them blending in entirely with the game board. It was loosely based off RTS games where selected units would have a glow around them for players to see which units were active.
The markers come in a diverse range to enable different narratives in the story whether it be controlling a computer terminal or sifting through skulls to find relics. I have been toying with the idea of army specific markers in the future such as injured space marines done in Imperial Fists (the marines chapter I care least for) for my White Scars army to rescue or even better, for my Tyranids to consume.
