Finally, a battle report! Well kind of because as much as I was eager to take photos at the start I had forgotten to get photos during... whoops!
The face off of this kill team battle was the Mantis Warriors Scouts vs my friend Jimmy's Scions.
Jimmy Scions are amazing and he was a damn genius to paint their shoulder pads to let people identify what they are equipped with.
Black and yellow = grenade launcher
Red Cross = medic
Chevrons = hotshot lasgun
Flames = flamer
Wifi = comes man
Blue electric bolt = plasma
Anyone else is a normal body and the sergeant is obvious too.
My Mantis Warriors are what you see is what you get. A sniper sergeant, 3 scout snipers, 2 heavy weapon scouts with rocket launchers and suspension systems, 2 bolters, 2 shotgun scouts with frag grenades.
We used a Nachmund set up, mission 1.2 which is a capture the objectives and hold them. The objects are moveable after you capture them and if the soldier holding it dies then it drops at their location.
On the set up the objects can be seen with the green bases in the top right and bottom left corners. Deployment zones in the other opposing corners.
Let the game begin!
Mantis Warriors won initiative choosing to fortify and started of opening fire instantly. A bolter scout on the southern end of the board burst firing at the western most scion inflicting 3 damage before he moved over the pipes to huddle down next to the objective.
The Scions then pressed forwards towards the silo in the centre of the map and a shotgun scout mirrored that move to the silo as well.
The coms man then issued an extra APL to the flamer man to ready him up.
The scout sergeant wasn't having any of that though and from his concealed vantage point fired his silenced sniper at the flamer scoring a phenomenal 4 6's. All shots, all 6. I lost my mind as did that poor flamer man took 4 instant mortal wounds and had the bullet rip through his head dropping him instantly.
A few moves later and the western most scion also dropped from being sniped. This were going good for the Mantis Warriors who were now concerned that their actions may be considered heretical but they've never done anything bad like that before right?
Then came the first casualty of the scouts with a rocket launchers scout being blown up by the grenade launcher. A bit of fire exchange later and the plasma and grenade launcher both had been wounded and left injured. Turning point 2 was around the corner.
The Mantis Warriors again won initiative and needed to look to start for objectives. Some of the Scions had already started to collect some. However 4 Scions had tried to take refuge behind the centre silo and packed themselves too closely. A shotgun scout ran around the corner and pulled the pin from his fragile hurling it at the Scions. The sergeant, medic and 2 troopers took significant damage and returned fire at the scout injuring him slightly luckily for me but unlucky for Jimmy. The the other scout came around the opposite side of the silo in a pincer attack. He too unpinned his frag grenade and let it fly into the bunched up Scions. The 2 troopers and medic all met their demise and the sergeant kicked on. He pulled his plasma pistol out and shot the 2nd shotgun scout dead. With his extra APL from the coms man, he charged the next shotgun scout and rose his sword. The sergeant cut at the scout inflicting damage but the scout survived. He parried back at the sergeant blocking his attack before his fists found home incapacitating the injured Scion leader.
With few men remaining the Scions were in for a rough few activations. By the end of turning point 2 only 2 Scions remained and the scouts had started to position themselves of the objectives.
At the start of turning point 3, the 2 remaining Scions tried to cover for each other. The Scion who had been the busiest at collecting artefacts having 2 was bunkered down waiting for salvation. What he got was a silenced sniper round to eliminate him from the game.
With only 1 Scion, left Jimmy conceded there and the game was over. 14 - 1.
A strong win for the Scouts who had some very fortunate dice rolls to pour on the damage as well as an oversight by Jimmy to bunch his troops which I took advantage of. The map layout also benefited me greatly with a vantage point allowing my scouts to cover a great deal of map control. The rust was also evident for both of us in positioning our troops movements.
Our adjudicator today was Jimmy's dog Postie, who supervised to whole game from his chair at the table.
