With a large number of the projects that I like to take up, many get stuck because of one decision. I'll find myself questioning "How do I decorate this banner with a design?", "How can I magnetise this?" or my most common - "How can I paint this ones sword so it looks cool, fits thematically and is not too complicated to achieve?"
Over the last few weeks I've been starting such projects then just pausing. It's a shame because I really want them finished but just don't know how. The release of Horus Heresy saw me optimistically pick up the set all for myself with the ambitions of doing Raven Guard as they are easy to paint in large numbers.... or so I thought. Then I planned out my painting strategy which was my Achilles heel. EDGE HIGHLIGHT EVERYTHING!
I got started on a praetor and found him to be an amazing figure to paint.
It started with a the loin cloth. I've become quiet confident in painting cloth now and the use of white for the White Scars left me familiar with the pallet to work with. The one exception here is I used a watered down old school Shadow Grey to shade into the valleys of the cloth instead of Drakenhoff. So far so good. Move on to the armour panels and larger details.
The armour all metalled up and the few extra white details and we had something I was pretty happy with. He was turning out better than I expected and that made me want to put even more effort into it (unlike anything made from finecast and resin.)
His back cloak and arm painted and attached and he was looking very boss like. I tried to take a lot of care painting even the hilt of the sword. Khorne Red base coat with Drakenhoff shade. Highlight the bottom Mephiston Red and the top Wild Rider Red and it emphasised the grip well.
So just his sword to go right? Well not quite. I realised I had stuffed up one small detail in Raven Guard heresy lore. As a Praetorian, his helmet should be white. So I changed it very carefully.
Now is the part I ask myself "What do I do with his sword?". That one question alone has derailed the project and he still sits on my table with his mighty unpainted sword held high. If you have any ideas please let me know so I can give this guy the proper recognition he deserves.
